10 Days of Magical Arctic Adventures & Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland

Pohjola route of Finland

The Pohjola route is a travel destination in the northern part of Finland, next to the Gulf of Bothnia and the border of Lapland. In the Pohjola Route, you can experience the diversity of Finland; from one region you can find the coast and archipelago, the wealth of forests and rivers & lakes, fells, and geological wonders. Pohjola is a journey that goes from cities to fells, from forests to the sea. Pohjola is beautiful. It is the heart of Finland and the country’s spirit at its most authentic.

FELLS

The trails and routes running along the southernmost fell area in Finland represent the freedom of the north at its most beautiful. At the heart of the fell area is Syöte National Park, adding versatility and variance to the Pohjola Route.

WEALTH OF FORESTS & RIVER BASIN

Pohjola Route runs along the coast of Gulf of Bothnia from Kemi and Oulu via Raahe to Kalajoki. Pohjola Route travels via 15 rivers, taking its travelers to the origins of many of the waterways. It’s where lush forests grow, undulating with ridges and dunes. The clean lakes and swamps sprinkled with marsh tea have visitors fall silent.

FROZEN ARCTIC SEA

Temperatures in Celsius frequently drop down to double-digit negative and the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland, and Gulf of Bothnia that surround the country freeze. You can ski on the frozen sea, skate, walk, or even drive to islands in the archipelagos, or, if you’re ballsy enough, you can take a dip in a hole cut into the frozen surface of the sea.

Kemi is especially famous for its Icebreaker Sampo cruises. This legendary Icebreaker has been working since 1960 and offers a lifetime experience to visitors. Sampo was built in 1960 at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki. The ship got its name from its predecessor of the same name, completed in 1898, which managed to serve the state for more than half a century. Finland is the only country in the world where all ports freeze in winter. In normal winters, the mercury can even drop below -30°C during the coldest periods.
